PhD Opportunities in Researching Hydrogen Technologies

We are currently in the middle of a tremendous transition in the way our energy is produced and in how the global energy system uses this energy as a result of the global challenges of climate change and environmental degradation. At a European level, all hands are on deck to tackle the looming possibility that global warming could exceed 2 degree Celsius. To this end, they have put in place significant policies to combat this risk and have pledged to become the world’s first climate-neutral continent .

One pathway which is being strongly promoted within the European Union is that of hydrogen. In order to achieve the full potential of this pathway however, there is a requirement for substantial investment into research to leverage the full potential of this amazing energy carrier.

To this end there are now a number of universities within the UK which are offering exciting PhD opportunities that will be delivering those leading-edge hydrogen related technologies into the energy system which will help to tackle the climate and environmental-related challenges which are the defining task of this generation.

Below is a sample of the PhD opportunites you can study:

  • Optimisation of pressure relief devices for hydrogen vehicles
  • Safety of using ammonia for the hydrogen economy
  • Modelling and simulation of hydrogen combustion, deflagration & detonation
  • Use computation fluid design models to analyse consequences of an onboard hydrogen storage tank rupture
  • Prevention and mitigation of incidents involving hydrogen use in a domestic setting

All these opportunities are available from the University of Ulster. There are other PhD opportunities in hydrogen which you can see here.

All of these positions come with a generous, yearly, tax-free stipend along with a research budge. Your opportunities are endless, and what better way to make a real change in the world than to be working in this exciting area?
Note: the deadline for some of these opportunities is the 05/02/2021.
